    On the Interface Between Operations and Human Resources Management

    Operations management (OM) and human resources management (HRM) have historically been very separate fields. In practice, operations managers and human resource managers interact primarily on administrative issues regarding payroll and other matters. In academia, the two subjects are studied by separate communities of scholars publishing in disjoint sets of journals, drawing on mostly separate disciplinary foundations. Yet, operations and human resources are intimately related at a fundamental level. Operations are the context that often explains or moderates the effects of human resource activities such as pay, training, communications and staffing. Human responses to operations management systems often explain variations or anomalies that would otherwise be treated as randomness or error variance in traditional operations research models. In this paper, we probe the interface between operations and human resources by examining how human considerations affect classical OM results and how operational considerations affect classical HRM results. We then propose a unifying framework for identifying new research opportunities at the intersection of the two fields

    We are pleased to present a Special Section on Statistics and Astronomy in this issue of the The Annals of Applied Statistics. Astronomy is an observational rather than experimental science; as a result, astronomical data sets both small and large present particularly challenging problems to analysts who must make the best of whatever the sky offers their instruments. The resulting statistical problems have enormous diversity. In one problem, one may have to carefully quantify uncertainty in a hard-won, sparse data set; in another, the sheer volume of data may forbid a formally optimal analysis, requiring judicious balancing of model sophistication, approximations, and clever algorithms.     Characterization of radially symmetric finite time blowup in multidimensional aggregation equations,

    This paper studies the transport of a mass μ\mu in d,d2,\real^d, d \geq 2, by a flow field v=Kμv= -\nabla K*\mu. We focus on kernels K=xα/αK=|x|^\alpha/ \alpha for 2dα<22-d\leq \alpha<2 for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range This paper studies the transport of a mass μ\mu in d,d2,\real^d, d \geq 2, by a flow field v=Kμv= -\nabla K*\mu. We focus on kernels K=xα/αK=|x|^\alpha/ \alpha for 2dα<22-d\leq \alpha<2 for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range we prove the existence for all time of radially symmetric measure solutions that are monotone decreasing as a function of the radius, thus allowing for continuation of the solution past the blowup time. The monotone constraint on the data is consistent with the typical blowup profiles observed in recent numerical studies of these singularities. We prove monotonicity is preserved for all time, even after blowup, in contrast to the case α>2\alpha >2 where radially symmetric solutions are known to lose monotonicity. In the case of the Newtonian potential (α=2d\alpha=2-d), under the assumption of radial symmetry the equation can be transformed into the inviscid Burgers equation on a half line. This enables us to prove preservation of monotonicity using the classical theory of conservation laws. In the case 2d<α<22 -d < \alpha < 2 and at the critical exponent pp we exhibit initial data in LpL^p for which the solution immediately develops a Dirac mass singularity. This extends recent work on the local ill-posedness of solutions at the critical exponent.Comment: 30 page

    Managers of agricultural cooperatives were contacted to determine their knowledge/capabilities and perspectives of the cooperative environment with special emphasis given to the importance of cooperative principles to the operation and success of the business, division of responsibility between management and the board of directors, and business decision making in the areas of financial analysis plus selected scenarios. Managers showed strong adherence to traditional cooperative principles and basic decision areas. Self-assessments were positive and consistent with performance measures.     Twist-controlled Resonant Tunnelling between Monolayer and Bilayer Graphene

    We investigate the current-voltage characteristics of a field-effect tunnelling transistor comprised of both monolayer and bilayer graphene with well-aligned crystallographic axes, separated by three layers of hexagonal boron nitride. Using a self-consistent description of the device's electrostatic configuration we relate the current to three distinct tunable voltages across the system and hence produce a two-dimensional map of the I-V characteristics in the low energy regime. We show that the use of gates either side of the heterostructure offers a fine degree of control over the device's rich array of characteristics, as does varying the twist between the graphene electrodes.Comment: 5 pages including references and 3 figure

    Nonparametric measures of the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture

    Nonparametric methods are used to measure the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture over the 1953–94 period. Results using both unrestricted and 30‐year lagged specifications of the research impacts on productivity suggest that while certain aspects of the nonparametric multi‐input/output technologies are quite robust to alternative specifications (in particular, the associated Malmquist total factor productivity indexes), other aspects are less stable (in particular, the indexes on input and, to a lesser extent, output biased technical change). Internal rates of return to research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture are estimated to be in the 12 per cent to 20 per cent range.Crop Production/Industries, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
